SPRINGFIELD – The IHSA Class 3A girls basketball state champion Morton Potters and the Class 2A wrestling state champion Washington Panthers were honored at the Illinois State Capitol on Tuesday. As the two teams looked on from the gallery, the House of Representatives adopted congratulatory resolutions for each squad. Members and coaches from each team also met with Governor Bruce Rauner earlier in the day.
“It is a great honor to bring groups of students from my district to Springfield to recognize their achievements,” said Rep. Keith Sommer (R-Morton) who represents both communities in the Illinois House. “This is getting to be a habit with these two teams: as each made their third visit to the Capitol in as many years.”
Morton captured the 2016-2017 Class 3A girls basketball state championship in March with a 44-37 win over Rochester at Redbird Arena in Normal. It was Morton’s third straight girls basketball state title. Washington took the wrestling state title when they defeated Wauconda 58-12 in February at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. The state championship was the second in a row for Washington and follows a 2nd place finish in 2015.
